Frequently Asked Questions / About Capital Ceramics

Why do I need to use large cones when my kiln has an automatic shut-off?
Large cones verify the performance of the shut-off device. If the large cone hasn´t bent properly when the kiln shuts off, or if it has bent too much, it indicates that the shut-off should be checked. The shelf cone is the final judge of the firing process, not the cone in the automatic shut-off.

Why should I use lead free glazes and how should they be fired for best results?
Lead free non-toxic glazes should always be used for utility food containers and serving dishes. They should always be used when working with children.

How long has Capital Ceramics, Inc. been in business, and can I depend on them to be there when I need supplies?
Merle started Capital Ceramics in 1950. Later, her husband (Tom, now deceased) joined her in the business. With hard work and persistence, the business grew and they bought the property at their present location at 2174 South Main Street.
